This is the theme around which Chalo Dilli is based and it works quite well mostly because the lead actors fit their characters like a glove.
Lara Dutta’s affectedly genteel ways and Vinay Pathak’s not-so-well-groomed, not-a-care-in-the-world attitude are contradictory. But both are good souls and develop a bond after enduring the travails of the journey from Mumbai to Delhi via Jaipur.

His last film For Colored Girls had more maturity and substance than anything he has done in the past, but Tyler Perry has regressed to familiar and fairly noxious ground with Madea's Big Happy Family. Harping on the familiar themes and character types from all the previous films with Madea in the title, the movie demonstrates if nothing else that he knows how his checks are signed, and artistic growth is nothing compared to pleasing his built-in audience with the same sap and slapstick they've paid for nine times before.
The contrast between For Colored Girls-- which was a flawed film, to be sure, but at least interesting-- and this movie is defined sharply by Loretta Devine, who played the sassy and sexually confident Juanita in the previous film but is practically entombed as a suffering mother in Big Happy Family. Early in the film her character Shirley is diagnosed with terminal cancer, and quite rationally she attempts to gather her three grown children at her home to break the news. Despite being a living saint, though, Shirley has raised two kids who are monsters and a third who is dating one, Tammy (Natalie Desselle) is mother to two bratty boys and constantly belittles her husband Harold (Rodney Perry); Kimberly (Shannon Kane) is a frigid real estate broker who constantly belittles her husband Calvin ("Old Spice guy" Isaiah Mustafa); and Byron (Bow Wow) is under constant pressure from his girlfriend Renee (Lauren London ) to go back to selling crack.

Two men are imprisoned in a room with opposing beliefs, and over the course of an hour and a half they dissect the human condition through conversation. Sunset Limited, an amazing stage-play written by Cormac McCarthy, is perfectly translated to celluloid here by Director/Actor Tommy Lee Jones. The acting storm is made up by the veteran talents of Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson.
The entire film takes place in a run-down apartment in the seedy side of town. Jones exercises a very minimalist style of filming, using nothing too fancy to allow the acting to shine. For the most part it's simple shots of the actors delivering lines that bleed with complexity. However, there are times that Jones focuses on a single subject, such as a hand on the bible or a steaming cup of black coffee, to intensify the mood or a point being made.
Needless to say this is an actor's showcase. Tommy Lee Jones plays a professor, only referred to in the credits as White, who recently attempted to commit suicide. He is a non-believer that genuinely despises life itself, finding everything in the world completely meaningless. Samuel L. Jackson plays an ex-con turned minister, referred to in the credits as Black. Jackson's character is a confident believer of the Bible, and tries to save White from his choice of suicide. The clashing of ideas is a shattering experience that is elevated by the dedication in the performances. Jackson is religiously-charged and completely devoted to saving this suicidal man, but he is also a layered character with baggage that bites. Jones is a highly intelligent, over-analyzing Professor that fails to experience happiness and purpose. Everything to him is hopeless, a cup with holes incapable of being filled, and Jones translates that mood with ease. The performances come off like a perfect tennis match.
McCarthy's dialogue is verbal fire. We are trapped in that room with Black and White, as they cover religion, atheism, purpose, happiness, and everything in between. It's one big philosophical debate about life itself that may resonate within the viewers for the extension of their lives. Inescapable questions are brought up about the way we are and our purpose in life, and some answers are formed to temporarily fill in a feeling of closure. The conversation has the ability to shake our hazy view on what life is and what it could be. This is truly essential viewing.

Inspired by a true story, this movie is about a 24-year-old first-time teacher who overcomes her initial fears and prejudices and makes a difference in the lives of the homeless children she teaches in a shelter's makeshift classroom.
Stacey Bess (Emily VanCamp), a young wife and mother of two in Salt Lake City who long dreamed of becoming a teacher, sets out to obtain her first teaching position after graduating from college at the end of 1987. With the school year already underway and her teaching options limited, she soon finds herself accepting a job at "a school with no name," where she is expected to teach homeless children from grades one through six in the same classroom. Despite concerns about the challenges of teaching students of various grade levels at the same time, Stacey is excited by the opportunity and earnestly prepares for her first day; however, her dream morphs into a nightmare when Stacey arrives at the shelter and finds that the "classroom" is a filthy shed with a few tattered books, one desk, several old mismatched chairs and a resident rat. The undernourished, unkempt and unruly children and their struggling, disillusioned and occasionally disrespectful parents are also worlds away from her teaching dreams.
Stacey fights off her tears and discomfort and, with her husband's support, decides to become an advocate as well as a teacher. She starts by cleaning, painting and decorating the "classroom" with the help of an eager student, Maria, and Nelson, a kind and artistic 65-year-old homeless man from the shelter whom Stacey enlists as a teacher's aid and art teacher. She also finds an ally in the school district's empathetic superintendent, who helps her get the desks and books that her students need and even donates his own family's piano. In their refurbished classroom, Stacey encourages the students to share personal stories, which is often a healing experience for them. Reacting to Stacey's obvious interest and care for them, the students start to blossom, demonstrating a thirst to learn and the ability to thrive in the classroom. Their parents react with appreciation and pride at their children's newfound knowledge and skills; however, setbacks and emotionally taxing moments are always around the corner, such as when children who are progressing so impressively are suddenly pulled from the school after their parents choose, or are forced, to leave the shelter. Stacey begins to realize that her time with these transient children is as important to her as it is to them and soon she can't picture herself teaching anywhere else.
Beyond the Blackboard is a Hallmark Hall of Fame production. Brent Shields ("The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler") and Gerald R. Molen ("Schindler's List") are executive producers; Jeff Bleckner ("Loving Leah") is the director.
